From today, the title 'social worker' is protected in law. 62,377 social workers have applied for registration in England to comply with the new legal restriction. Over 40,000 of these are already registered.

• Introduction of two separate sets of guidance, one for applicants under 28 years of age and one for applicants of 28 years of age and over.

• Clarification of the kind of documentary evidence that will be accepted in support of an HSMP application.
